Mainstream media should have a pulse on what’s most important in society. The front page of the New York Times (NYT) should be a slice of general society’s interest for that day. What about social bookmarking sites? Since readers pick their favorites to make their own front page, social bookmarking sites should reflect the interests of the community. Does mainstream media, like the NYT, parallel those interests of social media? Yes and no. Madoff making away with $50 billion makes the front page of Digg and the NYT. True, there’s a lot of parallels with social media and mainstream media, but you will never see, “Identifying yourself as a lesbian gets you banned on Xbox Live” on the front page of the New York Times. In a world where the news cycle is shorter than your drive to work, the NYT does a surprisingly good job keeping up. Social bookmarking sites are constantly updated by millions of users every day. It’s like strapping news to a rocket and blasting off every 30 minutes. While the NYT is a top source for bookmarking sites, we can see the emergence of an entirely different, new, alternative media. YouTube, The Huffington Post, Artstechnica are some of the alternative media ahead of the curve–receiving the torch passed on from traditional media. Back to the post title question: Are social bookmarking sites a pulse on societal trends? Our hypothesis was, yes. Let’s focus on one of Web 2.0’s most popular social bookmarking sites, Digg. To test this theory, we took the top dugg topics on Digg and plugged the top NYT topics into Google Trends. Were we right? Yes and no. The top dugg topics were shifted versus the NYT. Just sign up, paste the code into your web pages as instructed, and you’re ready to go. Beware—if you’re one of those personalities that monitors the daily fluctuations of the stock market, you may find Analytics just a bit addictive. If you’re a new website owner, get the Analytics program installed immediately. Down the road, you’ll realize the importance of traffic building activities and will be glad you took this initial step. There’s no need to hire a programmer--some of my favorite reports are quick and easy to create using Google Analytics. Create a Market Segment If you’re a company that caters to local or regional clients, you may want to create an Advanced Segment first. This will allow you to view any reports—including custom designed ones—as they really apply to your target market. Under Advanced Segments, create a new custom segment. For this example, we’re going to create a segment for the territory of Harrisburg, Lancaster, and York, Pennsylvania. Select Visitors, then slide the “City” dimension over to the report form. For “Condition” select “Matches Exactly”, then type “Harrisburg”. Continue this process for Lancaster and York, ensuring that you Add “or” Statement between each. Then, because some of these cities exist in other states, I will Add “and” Statement and slide over the Region dimension and “Match Exactly” to “Pennsylvania”. The last step is to name your segment. In this case, I’m calling it “York-Harrisburg-Lancaster-PA”. Then click on “Test Segment” to view the results. You now have the capability of viewing that market segment in any report—custom or canned. Now let’s monitor your traffic building progress. Monthly Organic Progress Report Organic search results are unpaid traffic that is sent to your website from the search results. To easily view your monthly organic search results, click on “Custom Reporting”, then “Create New Custom Report”. You’ll notice the same format you used when you created your market segment. Start with the metrics—slide over the metrics for Visits, Time on Site, Pages per Visit, Bounces and Bounce Rate. Most of these metrics are self-explanatory except for the Bounce Rate. The Bounce Rate is important—it’s the percentage of visits that immediately click off your site. It’s a great indication that either the wrong traffic is being sent to your site, wrong keyword usage, or the site needs some work. Now, under the Dimensions section, select “Medium” and slide it over to your report. Medium is the breakdown of organic, referrals, or direct visits to your website. As a Sub-Dimension, slide over “Month”, then “Keyword” below that. Be sure to edit the name to something you’ll better recognize. In this case I’m calling my report “Medium Progress by Month”. Your report layout should now look something like this: To finish, select “Create Report”. Save Your Report to the Dashboard. Select your report, then drill down to Organics, then Month. Apply your market segment filter by selecting the “Advanced Segments” in the upper right corner. Checkmark the “York-Harrisburg-Lancaster-PA” segment to apply to your custom report. You can deselect “All Visits” to view only your new market segment. Now that you have it the way you want to view it, select “Add to Dashboard” and you’ll have an instant view of the organic results every time you log onto your Analytics account. The second way to make money with twitter is alert people to a freebie opportunity. Simply put a link in your tweet to a CPA (=Cost-Per-Action) offer. CPA might be a whole new world for you, and you may need to read up on it. Google it. With CPA offers you can promote offers that would earn you a small amount, perhaps a dollar or two. The good thing is that people often only have to leave an email address or ZIP code, and then they get a chance to win an iPod, or win a certain amount of money for free shopping or whatever. This stuff can do well for you, especially if the offer is related to your interest. This method is similar to the one above, but the offer is attractive as it doesn't cost anything for your twitter followers. 3. The third and last tip is perhaps the best: make money with twitter by giving away a freebie, e.g. a report, ebook, video etc. in return for people entering their email address in your opt-in box. So you send a tweet with a link to your freebie, and build an email list. Then you can market to that list later. Instead of answering this question anew everyday, I'll post the final answer here. Here are some simple, easy, and very effective ways to generate some serious traffic to your website. First and foremost YOU have to be ready for it. YOU have to be willing to take action. YOU have to be patient and have faith. Sound too fuzzy for you? Sorry, but it's true. You are your first and biggest obstacle. Without your own action and faith you won't be seeing any visitors. So are you ready? Really? Here we go. Article Submission: This is my favorite. Whatever your niche is, golf, Pokémon cards, self-empowerment, Christian dating, people want to know more about it. I like to write and I love writing about my niche, traffic generation and internet marketing, but maybe you’re not the writing type. That’s no problem. Search out others who have posted articles. By taking the essence and ideas from these other articles, you can rephrase them into your own creation. It really doesn’t take much and with just a few paragraphs you have an article. Remember here that this is not a sales letter, but good free information people are interested in. The sales part I’ll explain soon. Now comes the submission. Do an internet search for ezines or article submitters. There should be quite a few that come up. Some will publish only their own site. Others will send your article out to a number of their sister sites as well. It is free to submit your article and when you do, include in your personal info the link to your website. Of course be sure that the website content matches the content you have written about in your article. Search engines sweep across these article sites looking for your article content, and you haven’t spent a dime for it! Press Releases: Another great way to get the word out is with press releases. Rather than information about a topic, here you are talking specifically about your own product. However, rather than a sales-pitch, your write up needs to be news-worthy. It needs buzz, it needs a reason to be in the forefront without the sales overtones. Again searching the internet for press release websites will garner several places you can go to submit your press release. This too is free, however some sites will push your article to the forefront for a small fee rather than counting on others to find you. The first option is good, the second better, but either way you can get traffic. Blogging: Everyone’s talking about blogging! If you enjoy writing about the many facets of your niche like I do, then blogging is a great way for you to get free traffic. By doing a search for a free blogging site, you’ll come across many places that you can get yourself set up. Much like the article submission sites, search engines will scan your blogs for the content they are looking for so there’s no need to pay to submit your blog to search engines. You can place the article(s) you’ve submitted above in your blog or you can write new content. It’s up to you. With a blog you can submit smaller bits of information about a number of areas within your niche and have them all available on that one page or site. Having links to your website or opt-in list all throughout the page is vital and will garner you the traffic you are looking for. When a website is new and not getting the thousands of hits that its owner craves, the temptation is there to buy visitors or accept anyone that accidently clicks on their link. However, as soon as your website starts getting interested traffic and making some sales you will probably realize that any old visitor simply will not do anymore. Think about it: getting a golfer to a cosmetics website is almost considered a step back. But getting a golfer to a golf club review site is good. Getting a rich golfer with a terrible backswing to your tutor website is perfect, especially if he was referred by someone. So the example of the golfer and the cosmetics site is an obvious one, but it does illustrate a very important concept. Getting a motivated buyer to your site should be where ALL your efforts go to. You should know who you want to visit your website, and you should know how to market to them. Keeping this in mind there are basically 2 types of buyers that you want: Firstly there is the ‘desperate buyer’. This poor soul has a rather large problem that he needs fixing as quick as yesterday. Two good examples are people in pain and people in financial trouble. They are almost willing to accept any solution, provided that it delivers results fast. These people almost cannot wait to give you their money and they also like to get their new product as quickly as possible. Great examples of products are medical products, get rich quick programs and fat loss products. The correct way you should to market to these people is to state their problem to them first. This serves a dual purpose; firstly it reinforces the problem to them, reminding them of it and then making them acutely aware of it, and secondly it shows them that you understand this terrible situation that they are in. Ever noticed how easily someone follows advice when the person giving the advice is a perceived expert or has had firsthand experience in the matter? You know, something in the line of ‘I was so fat I used to block out the sun, but after the first week of using Fat Tazer all the girls in my building started asking ME out’. Just make sure it stays believable. The second is the passionate buyer. This guy owns almost all of the available books, courses or products on a specific subject and identifies very strongly with what he has learned. That why they say that it’s easier to market to someone that has already proved himself as a buyer. Sadly though this category of buyers often don’t apply what they learn. They are merely seeking another pseudo solution to make them feel like they are doing at least something. Yet they always feel that they need more info or training. I would think that the correct way to market to this type of person would be to reinforce his connection to the subject. See, when a person passionately associates themselves with a particular field they create an identity around this. Remind them of the identity, reinforce the identity and then give them the chance to reinforce or build upon it themselves. If you would like this person as a repeat customer you should definitely reward them in some way after buying from you. Believe it or not but that reward may be as small as just congratulating them on their excellent decision in buying that new golf shoes, or Star Wars Light saber, or whatever. What I’ve seen is that these two groups of buyers absolutely love niche markets. If you make it easy enough for them to find your site they might come looking for you and not the other way around.
